THANKS FOR SUBSCRIBING TO BILLSCHANNEL - If you spent 27 hours and lots of money getting to Paradise, you expect some serious paradise, right? Not in Jimbaran Bay or Kuta Beach on the Island of Bali, Indonesia when I was there. The water and beaches were filled with more trash than I have ever seen on a beach. Indonesia's Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik has blamed the terrible condition of many of Bali's famed beaches, including Kuta, on the wind. The second-term minister, who has in the past faced criticism from the tourism industry about his ineffectiveness, said strong winds blew the garbage, dirt and other detritus onto the beach from the ocean. Jero, himself from Bali, also defended the resort island against a scathing article in Time magazine, which was titled "Holidays in Hell: Bali's Ongoing Woes." In the article, writer Andrew Marshall didn't hold back."Rivers swell and flush their trash and frothing human waste into the sea off Kuta Beach, the island's most famous tourist attraction, where bacteria bloom and the water turns muddy with dead plankton." He said skin infections caused by spending just 30 minutes in the ocean was just one of Bali's problems: "water shortages, rolling blackouts, uncollected trash, overflowing sewage-treatment plants and traffic so bad that parts of the island resemble Indonesia's gridlocked capital Jakarta.

Feb 26, 2012 - Aye, that is very true. You see, I have lived in Bali since the day I was born. The beaches used to be very clean and tidy. But after Bali's tourism boom, it all went to hell. I've organized some beach cleanups before with schools on the island. However the local people really don't care for it. Before the westerners came to Bali, the Indonesians used banana leaves and biodegradable materials to store their food and so on. But with the westerners came plastic, and plastic works not.

Feb 27, 2012 - Its like that a few months a year!! I did a research paper about it. If you go to Bali in dry season it will be no problem.

Feb 28, 2012 - what a shame - Bali could be so beautiful. I was going to visit there again soon, but I'll wait until they fix this problem. Plastic rubbish is a big problem throughout Southeast Asia. People used to buy fast food wrapped in leaves, but for the last 3 decades have been using plastic but tossing it by the wayside as if it would just break down like leaves.

Feb 28, 2012 - , i think its true, its poor Bali beach, there is a cup with a brand "Ale-ale" (it was on scrap heap on the sand beach) , its an Indonesian beverage. Feb 28, 2012 - I was there in 2010 and there was garbage everywhere. My driver said it was because the gov't dump the garbage in the ocean and the tides bring it back. I was extremely pissed about Kuta etc.....I finally went to Gili T and Lombok for good beachs and diving. The Balinese themselves dump their household garbage in the street and alleys where the wild dogs tear it apart. I'll take Thailand over Bali hands down. My driver and guide was embarrassed about this.

Feb 28, 2012 - Don't blame it on the tourists. Accept responsibility for this. You could have served me on a banana leaf, I don't care. Beer cans, chip bags, paper......I found the tourists picking up garbage on your beaches it was so bad. Don't blame the tourists, most of us come from countries that have an environmental conscience and recycling programs. Ie...Canada.

Feb 29, 2012 - Every night trucks from the airport dump human waste from all the flights into Jimberan Bay. I lost a close Balinese friend whos bedroom window was down wind from a trash pile filled with plastic that was burnt every night. Bali lost it's innocense in October of 2002.

Mar 7, 2012 - I'm not blaming the tourists. I'm saying that the change that came with westernization. I'm not a local, albeit I've lived in Bali my entire life. I won't be serving you unless you come for dinner to my home. I've seen tourists cleaning up, many in fact. Seen just as many throwing trash onto the ground. But the saddest thing I've seen is the locals themselves doing it. I believe that the entrance of western culture into Bali is the root cause of this problem.

Apr 24, 2012 - This reflects my experience of Bali Beaches. I was there a few months ago and would not even walk on any beaches there let alone swim it was so disgusting. The amount of trash everywhere including the beaches turned me off. In Australia I have never seen anything as bad as Bali. The Indo Govt needs a better rubbish collection plan I think. Looks like the Govt there does not care about the people.

May 12, 2012 - Kelly Slater recently returned from Bali and said the garbage in the water and on the beaches was the worst he'd ever seen. Stupid Indonesians, people won't pay to holiday in a garbage dump.

bellboy87 Says:
May 23, 2012 - So sad. Tourism has a huge role in Bali's economy, which obviously means there are a lot tourists visiting there... I think it's safe to say a fair amount of this trash comes from tourists. A lot of the locals probably aren't educated on biodegradable materials. Most likely the government doesn't have the funds, or there is too much corruption to do anything about the problem . Fucking sucks, but this is the case in many countries.
